Ringing in the Fall Season: Fun and Festive Family Activities

As the leaves start to turn colors and a chill begins to fill the air, it's an opportunity for families to have some fun saying goodbye to Summer and hello to Fall. The fall season offers so many enjoyable ways for kids to get outside and be creative! Here are a few of our favorites that we hope can bring your family together.

  1. Collecting Natural Treasures: Nature is worth appreciating! Consider scheduling a long walk or hike with the family with an added challenge to collect natural treasures along the way, like colorful leaves, acorns, and rocks. You could even take it a step further by taking time to identify the items collected or making a seasonal collage with them. This activity gets everyone moving, while tapping into skills like mindfulness, curiosity, gratitude, and creativity.

  2. Visiting a Farm: Local farms and orchards can be great settings for kids to learn where their food comes from, while engaging in fun activities like hayrides and mazes. Turn picking their own produce like peaches, apples, pumpkins and corn into a game. Set a number of each type of fruit or vegetable needed and encourage your kiddo to take the lead on picking them. Experiences like these can connect them to the environment and create more avenues for you to discuss different ways to prep and enjoy them together!

  3. Baking Spiced Goods: When you think of Fall, you may think of apple cider, pumpkin muffins, or cinnamon cookies, like us! Involve your child in making your favorite Fall goods with you throughout the season. Think of them as your sous chef, allowing them to measure and mix ingredients and help you garnish or decorate them as they wish. This can get you exercising your problem-solving skills and engaging in teamwork, while creating something from scratch that you’re excited to try!

  4. Decorating Pumpkins: Pumpkin carving may already be a family tradition for you, just like so many families across the country. If this is the case, spice up this tradition by decorating pumpkins with a certain theme or art material in mind. Invite your kid to create a cat, a turkey, or a zombie out of their pumpkin using paint markers or stickers. Let their imagination run wild and allow them to display their creation in place in or around the house that adds a nice festive touch!

Whether you decide to explore the great outdoors, enjoy cozy indoor activities, or a combo of the two, investing time to spend together can make the Fall season special!
