Middle School Trials and Triumphs
Middle school can be an exciting and turbulent time for your kiddo as they step firmly into their early adolescent and teenage years.
So many things are changing during this time, so it is important to be aware of how your kiddo is growing physically, mentally, emotionally and socially.
To help you out, here are a few common developmental milestones--as well as a few common stressors--to help you navigate this very important time in your kiddos life:
Physical
Puberty will begin to change their body causing quick growth spurts and weight gain.
Because they are growing so quickly, they may need more rest and may sleep more.
Their fine and gross motor skills are getting better, making them more coordinated with things like sports or creating art.
Mental
You kiddo will start to develop their own value system for what is important to them.
Curiosity continues to flourish, so they will enjoy discussing “what ifs” when making decisions.
You may notice a change in vocabulary, like the use of slang and metaphors that they are learning from their close peer group.
Emotional
Hormonal changes may cause changes in mood, especially as you kiddo tries to figure out how to manage and express their emotions.
Their feelings may become more sensitive, especially about what others say or think about them.
To build individuality and gain privacy, your kiddo may also start to keep personal or peer group secrets.
Social
Peer pressure will be a part of their social interactions and will influence their behavior.
They may enjoy trying out new styles and ways to express themselves to find what fits their personality.
Social skills grow as they develop a sense of their place in conversations, as well as what is appropriate to say in those conversations.
