At-Home Activity: Create a Vision Board
Successful people are constantly reflecting and coming up with new ways to grow and become better at what they do.
In this exercise, you can help your child imagine the type of person they want to be in the future and/or how they want to show up.
Ask them to think about how they would like to make a difference in the world.
Guide them in thinking of things and people that inspire and motivate them to be their best self!
To aid and support them in this journey, they will build their own Vision Board. Let’s get creative! Gather the recommended materials below with your child and/or family:
A large poster board
Pair of scissors
A picture of your child
Old magazines for cutouts
Images from the internet
Glue stick or tape
Markers, crayons, paint
The Vision Board is intended to serve as a source of inspiration for them, so encourage them to find items that resonate with how they want to show up now and how they would like to see themselves in the future.
This is a great activity for the whole family to do together. Not only does it help each family member tell their own story but it also helps you all hold one another accountable for trying to show up that way every day!
Have your child find a flat surface with a lot of room where they can spread out all of their materials. Help them look through magazines and go online to look for images that are meaningful and inspirational for them. Help them look for quotes, phrases, or words that describe their qualities and values. Allow them to print any images and text they find online, and cut out anything from magazines.
Also included as a part of this activity is a list of Skill Stars. Have your child cut out some of the skills that they are interested in building for the future. Feel free to have a discussion around these skills and why they feel important for your child to learn. Also share how you will help them build these skills moving forward.
Once they have their images and text cut out and printed, it's time to assemble their Vision Board. Have them place a photo of themselves in the center of the poster board and write their name in large, bold print around it. Then work with them to place the images they chose around their photo.
Use markers and crayons to include names of inspirational people and any inspirational quotes they like. They can also write out goals that they would like to work toward on their Vision Board.
Once your child is done creating their Vision Board, encourage them to share it with others if they are comfortable. Encourage them to talk about the important symbols, meaningful quotes, and pictures they included. Ask them how what they chose relates to the type of person they hope to be in the future. Be sure to be supportive of their vision and creativity as they share their work with you and others.
Once they are done sharing their Vision Board, be sure to hang it somewhere visible where they can continue to be inspired by it! For added fun, have everyone in the family work together to create a family Vision Board that includes goals the family has for the future.
